My Winter-Time Tips for Beautiful Skin and Hair

It’s winter for those of us in the northern hemisphere.  If you are like me and somewhere that is cold and dry, your skin and hair are definitely suffering.  Having a consistent skincare regimen is critical. However you also have to be responsive to the environment. Cold weather and dry heated air impact your skin and hair and may require modifying the products you use.

Personally, I think exfoliating is next to godliness and you should NEVER leave home without using under eye cream and sunscreen.  (Even if like me you and only going out to the barn to feed the animals.)

A few other tips when it comes to creating beautiful skin and hair:

  • Remove your makeup before going to bed at night - it’s a must!

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day - it is the key to great skin.

  • Sleep is essential, so create an environment that helps you get the best rest possible.

  • Try to forgo washing your hair every day - it can strip the natural oils and when it’s dry outside this can lead to more static.

  • Consider using a hair masque.  I have become a huge fan of hair masques. There are many on the market depending on your specific hair issues and needs.

While in Paris this past Fall I would frequently dart into the corner “Pharmacie” in search of some of the more renowned French beauty products. It’s impossible to see all these beautiful French women and not try to figure out what they are using!   Widely known for their beauty and style, they approach skincare differently than most American women. Part of this may be attributed to looking at skincare not as pampering, but as a necessary activity and one that can and should be enjoyable.

Thankfully my son and daughter had taken on the task of researching restaurants, boutiques and museums.  That allowed me to focus on things like cooking classes, home goods and beauty and skincare products for my “French Shopping List.”  Don’t worry, the products I have listed are all available in the US, so a trip to France isn’t a requirement but...

Here are five of my favorite products for winter:

Huile Prodigieuse

Oribe Power Drops

Oribe Imperial Blowout Cream

Embryolisse Cream

Neosporin Lip Care

Two I picked up in Paris were Huile Prodigieuse and  Embryolisse Cream.

Huile Prodigieuse was created over 25 years ago by the founder of Nuxe when she was pregnant and needed something for her dry skin. This dry-oil (meaning it doesn’t feel sticky) spray leaves you feeling sensual as well as hydrated. Dry oils are perfect when you are short on time (who isn’t?).  They are fast absorbing and lightweight as well. This beautiful little spray bottle can be used on your face, body and hair and smells delightful.

My second wintertime fix is my Embryolisse Cream.  It is often referred to as a cult favorite among top models, actresses and makeup artists.  They have been tucking this cream into their beauty bags for a long time and now it’s our turn.  I love the way my foundation glides on after using this cream and it’s not too heavy feeling which is really important to me because I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I love that it has a variety of uses.  It can be used as a base for your foundation, a makeup remover, or a moisturizing mask that leaves your skin feeling silky and smooth.

I like multipurpose products.  Some of these items can get pretty spendy so a good multi-tasker is important.  Despite the small bottle they come in, Oribe Power Drops last a long time. I have been known to buy all the Neosporin Lip Care I can get my hands on because I keep it everywhere.  There is a jar in my kitchen and in my downstairs bathroom as well as my car and in my makeup bag. This little pinch hitter lasts forever but you never want to run out if your are like me.

I am a huge Oribe fan and have been since my salon in Arizona started carrying their products ages ago.  My hair has taken a beating over the years with color treatments, switching from blonde to brunette, and back again more times than I care to admit.  I definitely attribute my “good hair days” to a wonderful colorist and Oribe products. The two I am using the most right now are the Imperial Blowout Cream and Oribe Power Drops.  These new drops are a serum that can be mixed with any of their products to help give your dry, damaged hair an extra boost.

I would love to hear how you are dealing with your wintertime skincare issues and any products that you swear by.  I hope that some of my beauty tips will help you stay beautiful all winter long!
